Mary Frances Hammersley, the wife of a London banker and a well-known hostess, perches on the edge of a gilded settee in a deep rose velvet dress, her head turned as if mid-conversation. Sargent painted her in 1892 and showed the picture at the New Gallery in London the next year, where its liveliness, set against the stiff portraits around it, helped establish him as the leading society portraitist in England. It is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A rose-velvet portrait full of movement for a dining room, sitting room or hallway in a dark wood frame. It holds a dark green, navy or warm grey wall and pairs with Lady Agnew.
