A couple stroll along a gravel walk in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris at dusk, the woman in a pink dress, a pale moon rising over the trees and a fountain basin behind them. Sargent painted it in 1879, when he was twenty-three and still a student of Carolus-Duran, and the grey-violet twilight shows how closely he was looking at Whistler and the French painters of modern life. He made two versions; this one is in the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A soft twilight park scene in grey, violet and pink for a bedroom, hallway or living room in a thin black frame. It pairs well with Hassam's Paris and New York street views and suits a pale grey or lavender wall.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is In the Luxembourg Gardens in the public domain?
Yes. John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Minneapolis Institute of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was In the Luxembourg Gardens painted, and in what medium?
In the Luxembourg Gardens dates from 1879 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 72.4 × 91.4 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
