Gertrude Vernon, recently married to the Scottish baronet Sir Andrew Agnew, leans back in a French armchair in a white dress with a lilac sash, a pale Chinese silk hanging behind her, and looks straight out of the picture. Sargent painted her in London in 1892, when she was twenty-seven, and the portrait's success at the Royal Academy the following year brought him a stream of British sitters. Its loose, quick handling of satin and chiffon against the steady modelling of her face is Sargent at his most fluent. The painting has been in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh since 1925.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A cool lilac-and-white portrait with a direct gaze, for a bedroom, dressing room or sitting room in a dark wood or thin black frame. It holds a soft grey, sage or blush wall and pairs with Sargent's Madame X for a portrait wall.
