Edith Minturn Stokes stands in a white skirt and a dark jacket, hand on hip and straw boater in hand, with her husband, the architect Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes, standing in shadow behind her. The portrait was a wedding present from a friend of the couple; Sargent first planned to paint Edith with a Great Dane, but the dog was not available and her husband took its place. The painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which received it from the sitters' son in 1938.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
