Mary, a young girl in a rumpled striped robe, sits on the edge of her bed and looks up at the angel Gabriel, who appears only as a column of golden light. Tanner painted it in Paris in 1898 after his first journey to Palestine, setting the scene in an ordinary Middle Eastern room. The Philadelphia Museum of Art bought it in 1899, the first painting by Tanner to enter an American museum.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
