The Thames at dusk is a sheet of pale blue, with the dark shore of Chelsea and the tower of its old church along the top, a few lights on the far bank and a barge and a lone figure in the foreground. This is the first of Whistler's river nocturnes, painted in 1871 after a boat trip at twilight, and it set the pattern for the whole series. The thin, fluid paint is brushed across the panel in long horizontal strokes, and the butterfly monogram sits in a small box at the lower right. It hangs at Tate Britain.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A misty pale-blue river nocturne for a bedroom, study or reading corner in a thin black frame. It suits white, dove grey or navy walls at 12×18 and pairs with Whistler's Nocturne: Blue and Silver – The Lagoon, Venice.
