About Childe Hassam
Frederick Childe Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in October 1859, worked first as a wood engraver and illustrator, and made his name in the 1880s with rainy, lamplit views of Boston's streets. Three years in Paris from 1886 turned him into the leading American Impressionist: he came back to New York in 1889 and painted its avenues, squares and arches in broken colour through every season, summering on Appledore Island, where his friend the poet Celia Thaxter kept the garden that became his most loved subject. In 1898 he co-founded the Ten American Painters. During the First World War he painted some thirty pictures of Fifth Avenue hung with the flags of the Allies, The Avenue in the Rain among them, which have become the best-known images of American Impressionism. He died in East Hampton, Long Island, in August 1935. Hassam's flag paintings and poppy fields print as bright, celebratory colour for a hallway, living room or office.
