Fifth Avenue in New York is hung with the flags of the United States, Britain and France, seen from above in a dazzle of broken colour, with crowds on the pavements below. America had entered the First World War a month before, and the avenue was dressed for the visit of the British and French missions. It is one of about thirty flag pictures Hassam painted between 1916 and 1919, and is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
