Columbus Avenue in Boston's South End shines with rain, its wet pavement reflecting the carriages, figures with umbrellas and the brick buildings that run back to a vanishing point. Hassam painted it in 1885, before he went to Paris, in a sober, almost photographic palette closer to Caillebotte than to Monet. It is in the Toledo Museum of Art.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A wide rainy street scene in warm greys for a hallway, study or office in a dark wood frame. It suits grey, ivory or deep green walls and pairs with Caillebotte's Paris Street; Rainy Day.
