Mucha — The Seasons

Mucha's first and best-loved set of decorative panels: four women, four seasons, printed in Paris in 1896.

5 prints · printed to order on heavyweight matte paper · framed or unframed

The set

The Seasons was Mucha's first series of decorative panels, published by Champenois in Paris in 1896, a year after the Sarah Bernhardt poster that made his name. Each season is a woman set within an arch of her own flowers and weather: Spring among blossom with a lyre of twigs, Summer with poppies by water, Autumn with grapes, Winter in a snowbound thicket with a bird. The set was so successful that Mucha produced two further Seasons in 1897 and 1900.

What's here

The four panels, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, each as its own print, and the four-in-one composite sheet that shows the set together.

Hanging the set

The panels are tall and narrow and were always meant to hang as a row of four, matched frames, 12×18 or 16×24. The exhibition-poster edition of each gives the narrow panel a sheet to stand on.
