A woman with chrysanthemums in her dark hair reaches up to gather grapes from a vine, her russet-draped figure set against a warm sky and the brown and gold of the turning year. Autumn is the third of The Seasons, the set of four decorative panels Mucha designed in Paris in 1896, printed as colour lithographs by F. Champenois and sold for framing in the home. It was his first series of this kind, following the fame of his Sarah Bernhardt posters, and its success led him to design two further Seasons sets, in 1897 and 1900, and the Flowers, Arts and Times of the Day that followed. Each figure embodies the character of her season through colour and gesture; Autumn is fruitful and generous. The impression reproduced here is from the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
