A dark-haired woman rests her head against a grapevine at the water's edge, red poppies in her hair, her bare feet trailing in the stream and her loose dress slipping from her shoulders in the heat. Summer is the second of The Seasons, the four decorative panels Mucha designed in Paris in 1896 and F. Champenois issued as colour lithographs, his first such series and the one that established the format of a single female figure set in nature that he would repeat for a decade. Where Spring is innocent and Winter chilled, Summer is languid and sultry, and the composition is the most relaxed of the four. The set was reissued in different sizes and followed by new Seasons in 1897 and 1900. The impression reproduced here is from the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
