The earth lodges of a Mandan village on the upper Missouri crowd a bluff above the river, with people on the rooftops, scaffolds and canoes, seen from above. Catlin stayed with the Mandan in 1832; five years later almost all of them died in a smallpox epidemic, which makes his paintings among the few records of their villages. It is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
