Gretchen Osgood Warren, a Boston poet and singer, sits in a pink silk dress with her daughter Rachel leaning against her shoulder, the two faces close together in the centre of the canvas. Sargent painted them in 1903 in the Gothic Room of Isabella Stewart Gardner's new house, Fenway Court, where he had been lent a studio, and the gilded carving behind them comes from her collection. The tender pose of mother and daughter is unusual among his society portraits. The painting is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A tender mother-and-daughter portrait in pink and gold for a bedroom, nursery or sitting room in a dark wood frame. It suits blush, cream or soft green walls and makes a lovely gift for a mother.

Size. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
