- The Voyage of Life
The last canvas of The Voyage of Life. The river has emptied into a dark, calm ocean; the battered boat carries an old man with white hair, and his guardian angel, now visible to him at last, gestures upward to where the clouds part and light pours down from heaven with angels descending. There is no landscape left, only water, rock and sky: the journey is over. Cole conceived the four pictures as a continuous allegory of faith, from the innocence of childhood through the overconfidence of youth and the trials of manhood to this final deliverance. He painted this set in Rome in 1841 and 1842, exhibited it in Rome and across the eastern United States, and sold it to George Shoenberger of Cincinnati. It is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
