Two white doors stand open in a grey-panelled room. Through the central doorway a woman in a long black dress stands with her back to us near a sunlit window in the next room, while a mahogany chair and two small framed pictures sit against the wall at left and the bare floorboards run dark toward us. The woman is Ida Hammershøi, the painter's wife, in their flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen, where they lived from 1898; the Städel describes how the open doors frame her, set at the centre like an object. Painted in 1901, it was acquired for the Städel Museum in Frankfurt in 2012.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
