In a dark stable a young peasant woman dozes on a low stool with a swaddled baby across her lap, while a lantern hanging beside her lights the flank of a brown and white cow; the cow's calf lies curled in the straw. Everything is laid in warm browns, ochres and gold. Segantini signed and dated it 1889 and showed it in Turin, then in 1891 at the first Brera Triennale in Milan, where it stood beside Previati's Motherhood as a large showcase of the new Divisionist technique. The Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan bought it in 1927.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Lamplit browns and ochres give a warm, quiet scene for a kitchen, dining room or farmhouse hallway. Pair it with Van Gogh's The Potato Eaters at 36×24 in a dark wood frame.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
