Low sunlight catches the face of a great blue wave as it breaks over black rocks, while the sky above is a heavy plum-brown. Homer painted it at Prouts Neck in Maine in 1890, early in the series of storm-coast pictures that made his late reputation. The contrast of dark sky and lit water gives the scene the feeling of a brief break in bad weather. The painting has been in the Toledo Museum of Art since 1912.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A dark plum-and-blue storm sea for a living room, study or office wall in a black frame. It holds a navy, charcoal or warm grey wall at 36×24 and pairs with Homer's West Point, Prout's Neck.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
