A tall coconut palm bends in the wind against a white-and-blue sky above the turquoise water at Nassau, with a red flag and a lighthouse on the horizon. Homer wintered in the Bahamas in 1884–85 and again in 1898–99 and painted some of his freshest watercolours there. The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought this sheet in 1910, the year of his death.
