A great wave bursts in white spray against the dark rocks of Prouts Neck, Maine, under a low grey sky, with nothing else in the picture but sea, rock and foam. Homer lived at Prouts Neck from 1883 and painted its coast in storms for the rest of his life. He first included two figures in oilskins on the rocks and painted them out in 1901, leaving the bare elemental scene. The painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
