Two fishermen in a small dory haul a net heavy with silver herring out of a grey swell, one lifting the catch while the other unloads it, with schooners waiting in the mist behind. Homer painted it at Prouts Neck in 1885 after watching the herring run, and it belongs to the same group as The Fog Warning. It is in the Art Institute of Chicago.

Where it works
A strong, silvery working-sea scene for a study, kitchen or coastal house, framed in dark wood or black. It suits slate, white or navy walls and is a good gift for an angler.
