Dark, slender tree trunks stand on a low grassy slope against a pale grey sky, their brown foliage soft and blurred, as if seen through mist or failing light. There are no people, paths or buildings, only the trunks spaced across the canvas and a ground of dry brown grass. Hammershøi painted these trees at Arresødal near Frederiksværk in North Zealand in 1904. The picture once belonged to the collector Alfred Bramsen; when it was sold at auction in 1998 to an English buyer, an export ban kept it in Denmark and it was bought for the National Gallery of Denmark.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
