A still bend of the Sainte-Marguerite River in Quebec reflects green wooded hills and purple shadows, with a white gravel bar in the foreground and mountains rising behind. Benson, a keen fisherman, returned to the Sainte-Marguerite for salmon year after year, and he painted the river in rapid watercolour washes over light pencil, leaving bare paper for the glare on the water. The sheet is signed and dated 1922 and was bought by the Rhode Island School of Design Museum that year.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A cool river landscape in green, violet and white for a study, cabin or hallway in a dark wood frame. It pairs well with Homer's Adirondack watercolours and suits a sage, stone or white wall.
