Wally Neuzil tilts her head and looks out with wide, pale blue eyes, her copper hair pushed back and a lace collar spread over a black dress, against a thickly brushed white ground. A sprig of dark leaves and red berries trails down the right edge. Schiele painted the small panel in 1912 as a counterpart to his Self-Portrait with Chinese Lantern Plant; Neuzil was his partner and model until 1915. A US court found in 2009 that it had been taken from the dealer Lea Bondi Jaray in the late 1930s; a 2010 settlement with her estate returned it to the Leopold Museum in Vienna.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A white ground, a black dress and two vivid blue eyes make a small, direct portrait for a study, reading corner or bedroom, hung at eye level. Pair it with Schiele's Self-Portrait with Physalis, the companion he painted for it, at 16×12 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×12. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.

Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is Portrait of Wally Neuzil in the public domain?
Yes. Egon Schiele (1890–1918) died more than 70 years ago and the work was made and first published more than 95 years ago, so the painting itself is public domain in the US and Europe. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Leopold Museum.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 16×12 and 24×18 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Portrait of Wally Neuzil painted, and in what medium?
Portrait of Wally Neuzil dates from 1912 and was made in oil on wood; the original measures 32 × 39.8 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×18 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×12 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Portrait of Wally Neuzil we'd choose 16×12. It is a landscape print, wider than it is tall, at the painting's own proportions.
