Three sisters in white gowns, Mary, Madeline and Pamela Wyndham, are grouped on a sofa in the drawing room of their parents' London house, with a portrait of their mother by G. F. Watts hanging in the gloom above them. Sargent showed it at the Royal Academy in 1900, where it was nicknamed 'The Three Graces', and it is one of the grandest of his group portraits. The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought it in 1927.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A grand portrait of three sisters in white for a living room, dining room or stair wall, framed in dark wood. It needs a dark or warm wall, deep green, burgundy or chocolate, and makes a gift for sisters.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is The Wyndham Sisters: Lady Elcho, Mrs. Adeane, and Mrs. Tennant in the public domain?
Yes. John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) died more than 70 years ago and the work was made and first published more than 95 years ago, so the painting itself is public domain in the US and Europe. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×16 and 18×24 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Wyndham Sisters: Lady Elcho, Mrs. Adeane, and Mrs. Tennant painted, and in what medium?
The Wyndham Sisters: Lady Elcho, Mrs. Adeane, and Mrs. Tennant dates from 1899 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 292.1 × 213.7 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 18×24 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 12×16 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
