Ida Hammershøi sits at a table covered with a deep red cloth, her head resting on one hand as she reads a book laid flat in front of her. Behind her a white panelled door is shut, a small gilt frame hangs on the grey wall, and in the corner stands a tall black stove with its pipe running up the wall. The room is in the couple's flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen, where they lived from 1898. Hammershøi married Ida Ilsted in 1891, and she appears in many of his interiors. He painted this in 1902, and the National Gallery of Denmark has owned it since 1924.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
The deep red tablecloth warms the greys and the black dress, which suits a study, library or reading nook. Pair it with Hammershøi's Interior, Sunlight on the Floor and hang this one at 16×24 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
