Cleopatra, in a white gown and pearls, holds one of her earrings over a glass of vinegar as Mark Antony watches across the table, about to lose their wager over who could stage the more extravagant feast: she will dissolve the pearl and drink it. The story comes from Pliny's Natural History, and Tiepolo set it on a marble terrace among columns and attendants in a theatrical composition that pays open homage to Veronese's great Venetian feasts. He painted it in 1743 to 1744, and it is the first of his three large versions; his modello for it, once owned by Count Algarotti, is in the Musée Cognacq-Jay in Paris, and he returned to the subject in fresco at the Palazzo Labia in Venice. The canvas, more than three and a half metres wide, hung in the Hermitage until the Soviet government sold it in 1932, and it is now in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
