A crowded ferry heels in a stiff breeze off Rotterdam, with a Dutch warship riding in the background. Turner painted it in 1833, one of a group of seascapes with Dutch subjects he produced in the early 1830s in open homage to the seventeenth-century marine painters he had studied since youth. It was shown at the Royal Academy in 1833 and bought at the exhibition by Hugh Munro of Novar, the Scottish collector who became one of Turner's most devoted patrons. The picture stayed in British hands for well over a century, passing through Agnew's and the collection of Sir Charles Tennant, before it came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1970. It is a reminder that alongside the visionary late Venetian canvases Turner remained a painter of real weather and working boats.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
