A dark whirl of sky and water on a nearly square canvas, in which the last light drains from the world before the Flood and the drama is carried by tone rather than by legible figures. Turner painted it around 1843, the year he exhibited his pair of Deluge pictures, Shade and Darkness: The Evening of the Deluge and Light and Colour (Goethe's Theory): The Morning after the Deluge, both now at Tate Britain. The Washington canvas is closely related to the first of those and shares its vortex-like design. It was long unknown to the public: in 1872 it was sold at Christie's under the title The Animals Going into the Ark, and it passed through a Scottish collection and the Sedelmeyer gallery in Paris before reaching America. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
