Boats pitch in a heavy swell where the Thames meets the Medway off the Kent coast, under a sky of torn cloud. Turner painted it in 1807, in his early thirties, when he was studying the Dutch marine painters of the seventeenth century and making a speciality of the choppy estuary waters below London. Rather than send it to the Royal Academy, he showed it in his own gallery in Queen Anne Street, where it was bought that year by Thomas Lister Parker. The canvas later belonged to the Birmingham collector Joseph Gillott, one of the great Victorian buyers of Turner's work, and passed through several further English collections. It entered the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1942 with the Widener Collection, an early marine from the years in which Turner made his name.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
