Eight-year-old Cicely Alexander, daughter of the London banker and collector William Alexander, stands against a grey wall in a white muslin dress with a grey-green sash, holding a felt hat, with daisies and two butterflies at the left. Whistler designed the dress himself and kept her standing through dozens of sittings, which she later remembered as a trial. The picture is one of his finest arrangements of a few close tones of grey, white and green. It hangs at Tate Britain.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A tall, quiet grey-and-white portrait for a hallway, bedroom or landing in a thin black frame. It suits pale grey, sage or soft white walls at 12×18 and pairs with Whistler's Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2.

Size. We'd hang this one at 12×18. Prints at 12×18 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.

Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
