Saul of Tarsus lies on his back on the road to Damascus, arms flung up and eyes closed, blinded by the light that has thrown him from his horse, while the great piebald animal lifts a hoof carefully over him and an old groom holds its bridle. There is no sky and no vision; the whole event happens inside the fallen man. Caravaggio painted it in 1601 for the Cerasi chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, facing his Crucifixion of Saint Peter, after a first version on panel had been refused, and the horse's rump pushed toward the altar was found scandalous. The picture is still in the chapel, lit from the window above as the painter intended, and it remains among the boldest reductions of a miracle to a single body on the ground.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
