About this work

Year
1882

Original size
45.1 × 53.9 cm
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington
Movement
Realism

A young woman wrapped in a black shawl walks down a narrow Venetian back street while two men in cloaks watch her from a doorway. Sargent spent the autumns of 1880 and 1882 in Venice and, instead of the canals and palaces tourists painted, chose shabby calli, grey stone and working people in a muted palette of greys and browns. The small group of street scenes from these visits is among the most modern work of his early career. This one is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A quiet grey street scene with one figure in black, for a hallway, study or reading corner in a thin black frame. It suits a stone, warm grey or deep green wall and pairs with Whistler's Wapping or a Venetian view.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Street in Venice in the public domain?
Yes. John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Gallery of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Street in Venice painted, and in what medium?
Street in Venice dates from 1882 and was made in oil on panel; the original measures 45.1 × 53.9 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
