An old man in a blue smock sits on a wooden chair by a stove, elbows on his knees and face buried in his fists. Van Gogh painted it at the asylum of Saint-Rémy in May 1890, two months before his death, from a lithograph he had made in The Hague in 1882 of a pensioner named Adrianus Zuyderland, whom he had drawn many times; the original title was Worn Out, and the Dutch name is Sorrowing Old Man. He wrote of the earlier drawing that it expressed the sense of something on high, close to God, in a poor old man who has no idea of it, hence At Eternity's Gate. The thick strokes of the floorboards and the glowing stove are the asylum style at its most compressed. The painting is in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
