The Café de la Gare in Arles at night: blood-red walls, a green ceiling, four hanging lamps with haloes of yellow, a billiard table with its long shadow, and a few customers slumped at the tables while the proprietor in white stands by. Van Gogh painted it over three nights in September 1888, staying up until dawn, and wrote to Theo that he had tried to express the terrible passions of humanity by means of red and green, and that the café was a place where one could ruin oneself, go mad or commit a crime. He gave it to the landlord Ginoux in payment of rent. It passed through the collection of Ivan Morozov in Moscow, was sold by the Soviet government in 1933 and came to the Yale University Art Gallery with the Stephen Clark bequest.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
