Two little girls in white summer dresses and sun hats play on a sunlit grassy bank above the sea at New Castle, New Hampshire, one striding forward with her arms out, the other sitting in the grass in pink. They are two of Benson's own daughters, painted in 1899 in full outdoor light with quick, broken strokes that show him moving towards Impressionism. The square canvas won a medal at the Carnegie Institute's annual exhibition in Pittsburgh that November and was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. It is now in the collection of the Terra Foundation for American Art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A sunny, joyful picture in gold, white and pink for a bedroom, playroom or family room in a dark wood frame. Its square shape suits a wall above a dresser or a chest and pairs well with Chase's beach scenes on a cream wall.

Size. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
