Three women in bright crinolines and a man stooping to set a ball play croquet on a sunlit lawn. Croquet had just become a fashionable game in America, one of the few outdoor sports men and women played together, and Homer painted five pictures of it in 1865–66. The flat, bright colour and strong shadows made the series some of the most modern American paintings of the decade. This one is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
