Max Schmitt, a champion oarsman and Eakins's school friend, rests his oars on the still Schuylkill River in Philadelphia on an autumn afternoon, with the Girard Avenue and Connecting Railroad bridges behind him. Eakins painted himself rowing away in the second scull, his name on the boat's stern. It was the first of his rowing pictures, made the year after he came home from Paris, and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
