Two lit candles stand on a small round table in an almost black room, their glow picking out the tabletop, the curved end of a settle on the left and the corner of a second table on the right. The whole scene sits inside a painted oval, as if seen in a mirror. Most Hammershøi interiors are lit by daylight and often include a woman; the National Gallery of Denmark points out that here he made an exception, a dark room at night with no one in it and furniture arranged for no evident purpose. He painted it in 1909, and the museum acquired it in 2012.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Near-black with two small candle flames, it suits a dining room, a dark-painted snug or a bedroom wall lit by a lamp. Pair it with Böcklin's Isle of the Dead and hang this one at 24×18 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
