The bows of three dark sailing ships lie moored side by side, their masts and rigging drawn in quick brown lines that criss-cross a pale sky. Behind them runs a band of orange-brown quayside wall, and the right-hand third of the canvas is left almost bare, the cream ground showing through. Hammershøi painted this small study in 1905 on the canal in Christianshavn, the Copenhagen district where his home stood. It belonged to his widow Ida, then to Karl Madsen and his descendants, and the National Gallery of Denmark acquired it in 2005.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
