Four people gather round a softly lit table in a dark room at night, the tall windows behind them black. A man with grey hair sits in the foreground with his back half turned, his head bent over the table; across from him a bearded man looks out, a woman's pale face catches the light, and a fourth figure stands at the right. Almost everything else dissolves into brown-black shadow. A longer title recorded by the National Gallery of Denmark names them as Henry Madsen, Ida Hammershøi, the painter's brother Svend Hammershøi and, in front, Thorvald Bindesbøll. Painted in 1904, it was acquired in 1970.
