A broad stretch of pale harbour water opens under a blank sky of blue-grey and cream, with two long dark hulls moored along a quay on the far side and a few thin masts beyond. In the foreground a pale roof or covered boat is sketched in a few lines, and much of the canvas is left as thin, scrubbed paint. Hammershøi painted this view over Copenhagen harbour from Kvæsthusgade in 1908. After his death it passed from his widow Ida to her brother, the painter Peter Ilsted, and stayed in his family; it has hung in the National Gallery of Denmark since 2017.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Pale blue-grey water and sky, barely broken by dark hulls, suit a bathroom, bedroom or a coastal living room with white walls. Pair it with Whistler's Nocturne in Blue and Silver: The Lagoon, Venice and hang this one at 36×24 in a black frame.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
