A corner of an empty panelled room at night: a tall double window of small panes, a closed four-panel door to the right, and on the dark floorboards a pale grid of moonlight cast through the glass. Walls, door and floor are all a soft mauve-grey, and the only bright notes are the window sill and the light on the floor. Hammershøi painted it in the flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen, where he and his wife Ida lived from 1898 and where he made around sixty-six interiors. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates it between 1900 and 1906 and bought it in 2012.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Mauve-grey panelling and a pale grid of moonlight on dark boards make this a calm picture for a bedroom or a quiet reading corner. Pair it with Whistler's Nocturne: Blue and Silver – Chelsea and hang this one at 24×18 in a black frame.
