A long whitewashed wall runs across the sheet, with a doorway at the left, while a plant with scarlet, star-shaped blossoms leans over the top against a turquoise sea and a single white sail. Homer made the watercolour in Nassau in the Bahamas during the winter of 1898–99, when he painted in quick, saturated washes and let the white paper do the work of tropical glare. The red flowers and the blue water are the only strong colours in a picture built almost entirely from the blank wall. It is one of the Bahamas watercolours the Metropolitan Museum bought in 1910.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
