A red fox struggles through deep snow on a Maine headland while a flock of black crows, hungry in the winter, swoops down on it. Homer painted it at Prouts Neck in the winter of 1892–93, using a dead fox as a model, and it is the largest picture he ever made. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts bought it in 1894, the first of his paintings to enter a museum collection.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
