A man in a white shirt, his army jacket and canteen thrown aside in the lower right corner, cuts ripe wheat with a scythe under a blue sky. Homer painted it in the summer of 1865, months after the end of the Civil War and the assassination of Lincoln, as a picture of a soldier returning to farm work; he first painted a cradle scythe and then reduced it to a single blade, an image that also recalls the figure of Death. It is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
