A naked man crouches on a bed behind a naked woman, his yellowed body angular and his eyes fixed on us, while a small child wrapped in a blanket peers out between the woman's knees; all three emerge from a near-black room. Schiele began it in 1918 as Crouching Couple, with himself as the man, and later painted the child, modelled on his nephew Toni, over a bouquet of flowers. It hung at the 49th Vienna Secession exhibition that year. Edith Schiele died of Spanish flu that October, six months pregnant, and Schiele died three days later. The Belvedere acquired the painting in 1948.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Dark browns with bronze and greenish flesh tones make a heavy, serious picture for a study, library or hallway with good light. Pair it with Munch's Madonna at 24×36 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
