A man in a hat stands by a bridge railing in the foreground, head bowed, while two figures in top hats walk away along the road behind him. Beyond, a blue fjord with sailing ships lies under a sky streaked red and yellow. Signed and dated 1892, the painting also goes by the title Sick Mood at Sunset. While working on it Munch wrote in his diary of the sky suddenly turning red and of sensing a great scream passing through nature, the experience behind The Scream. It launched his series of anxiety paintings and hangs in the Thiel Gallery in Stockholm.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Red sky, blue fjord and one bowed figure make an intense picture for a study, office or hallway rather than a bedroom. Hang it beside Munch's The Scream, its direct successor, at 16×24 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
