A man in a dark brown monk's habit holds a red-haired young woman who clings to him with both arms, the pair entwined on a crumpled white sheet over a ground of ochre and brown rocks. His eyes stare past her; her dress is a flurry of small pink and red strokes. Schiele painted it in 1915, the year he married Edith Harms and was called up for war service, and first titled it Man and Girl. According to the Belvedere, the man is a self-portrait and the woman is Wally Neuzil, his long-time partner and model, from whom he had just parted. The museum acquired it in 1930.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Browns, ochres and a crumpled white sheet make a sombre, intimate picture for a study, library or living room rather than a bedroom. Pair it with Böcklin's Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle at 24×36 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
