An easel stands in the middle of a grey room with a canvas on it turned away from us, the painter's chair behind it against the wall, while an open door on the right shows a white bowl on a table in the next room and a gilt-framed picture hangs high on the left wall. No one is present. The National Gallery of Denmark reads it as a study of the artist's absence: Hammershøi has risen from his chair and moved round to paint the easel from behind. The museum adds that he and his wife Ida collected older Danish art. Painted in 1910, it was acquired in 1988.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Soft greys, a touch of gold and an empty easel suit a studio, home office or study where someone paints, writes or works. Pair it with Whistler's Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle and hang this one at 16×24 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
